News from The Callum Macdonald Awards ceremony, which took place in The National Library of Scotland, in Edinburgh, on Thursday 12th May: from a shortlist of 6, the winner was Shed Press with the pamphlet ‘Makkin-wires’ by Jenny Elliott.
But a great outcome for Wayleave Press was being runner-up, or second place as some reports refer to it, with ‘CLAY’ by Elizabeth Burns. Elizabeth was well-known and much respected in Scotland, so this particular success for her pamphlet feels very fitting.
The poets from each of the shortlisted pamphlets were invited to give a two-minute reading. In the case of ‘CLAY’, Alan Rice, Elizabeth’s husband, did the honours with a well-chosen selection.
It’s gratifying to feel that, as well as publishing quality poetry, Wayleave are getting things right with design and presentation. And the prize-money will give the finances a welcome nudge into the black.
